J & S Franklin Ltd introduce their DefenCell range of rapidly deployed, lightweight, compact, non-metallic, earth filled protective barrier systems.

DefenCell has been designed by engineers for Engineers and is a containment system for earth, sand or other locally available fill materials.

DefenCell uses a proven construction system that has been extensively used in the building, oil & gas, road and rail industries for many years.

DefenCell is modular in design, and construction can be tailored in height, width and configuration to meet operational force protection requirements for barrier walls or structures for protection against ballistic threats, blast mitigation and moving vehicles.

Rapid Deployed Protective BarrierDefenCell has a minimum serviceable field life in excess of 30 months. The material has built-in UV resistance, is durable and easily painted or coated if required. DefenCell installations in Afghanistan with the British Army have been in situ for 2 and a half years with no additional maintenance.

DefenCell structures are completely non-metallic, removing the risk of secondary shrapnel and spall or compass and RF interference. It does not rust or rot in harsh or wet conditions. Fiberweb Typar geotextile materials, as used in DefenCell, have been installed for 25 years or more in roads and continue to be used in the housing, construction, transport and oil & gas industries.

DefenCell is completely manufactured in the UK and USA from tough and durable, internationally renowned, Fiberweb Terram® or Typar® nonwoven geotextile with enhanced UV protection. DefenCell is fabricated using a patented design, to create a range of strong, modular and versatile cellular products to suit many different applications.

DefenCell offers significant logistical advantages over sandbags and other barriers systems. It is man portable, with a typical 5m long section, weighing less than 10kgs and is easy to handle. Over 1,100m of 1.35m wide, 1.10m high wall can be transported in a single 20’ shipping container. It can be safely dropped from a truck or helicopter with no risk of damage.

DefenCell is a versatile and flexible, modular design, allowing different sizes to be combined for enhanced protection and specific tasks, however the cellular design gives it significant structural strength for building Forward Operating Bases (FOB) and Observation Posts (OP) as well as Bunkers and Firing Positions. DefenCell fill can be compacted so it will support overhead protection systems. Perimeter barriers for critical infrastructure can be easily and rapidly constructed, with specific profiles to combat vehicle attack. The natural appearance of the material allows the barrier to quickly blend to its surroundings.

DefenCell has been supplied to UK Ministry of Defence as well as US Forces in the mainland US and Hawaii, the Irish DoD and other overseas government organizations. It is in service in Afghanistan and provides protection to Ammunition Supply Points (ASP) at Camp Bastion and Kandahar.

Force ProtectionDefenCell can be used to provide an effective barrier for traffic and to construct checkpoints, chicanes and guard posts. The DefenCell vehicle barrier has been tested against K8 and K12 threats in both UK and USA. Again, the lightweight features of Defencell and its rapid deployability make it ideal for stand-alone operations or to temporarily enhance existing security measures.

DefenCell has been ballistically tested against ammunition up to 25mm cannon, including APDS and tracer, as well as multi-shot and provides excellent protection. Extensive testing has also been carried out to evaluate performance against a range of IED’s and simulated weapons. DefenCell performs particularly well in blast mitigation tests as the cellular structure absorbs shock and minimizes shrapnel penetration.

DefenCell is a truly versatile product and is also suitable for a wide range of engineering applications. Panels of DefenCell cellular material can be used for ground stabilization, preparing roadways and for building hardstand areas for vehicle and aircraft movement. Barrier walls can be constructed to provide flood protection, either to protect infrastructure or to raise existing levees temporarily in emergency.
